Unique Halloween Decor

Initially when I was planning what to do for this year's Halloweek, I had the intention of going to a thrift store and getting things to make an Alice in Wonderland costume, but my mission was thwarted by Saver's (a quite large thrift store) really awesome collection of knick knacks. I absolutely love having knick knacks. In fact I built a shelf in my tiny, tiny room just for my little guys. When I was walking through the aisles at Saver's, I was thinking about how these non-Halloween decorations could easily be passed off as made for the holiday.

This golden candle stick reminded me of something you would find in a movie where members of the occult are summoning the devil.
Dolls are just always creepy. This one in particular caught my eye because she reminded me of the kind of ghost you see in Insidious.
The hand on the right is slightly purple which to me makes it look like a zombie hand, and with the little flower in its hand makes it look even more like it just broke free from the dirt.

I highly suggest thrift shopping once in a while. You're sure to find some neat things. That's usually where I go for some of my craft items.

The next part of my blog is going to be heavily focused on sugar skulls. Yesterday I put a video up on the blog showing a time-lapse transformation of me turning into a living sugar skull. Today I will be showing you my ever growing Day of the Dead collection and also a quick DIY of a really cool thing I picked up at Barnes& Noble the other day.

On the left is the most authentic of them all (straight from Mexico). The black skull is something I made and decorated (everyone thinks it's super creepy). On the right is a character from the movie The Book of Life which I thought was a really cute and very well-made movie (go see it!). The tall little dude is something I couldn't leave behind at the store (he was practically begging to come home with me). And finally there is the giant doll that I found at the Christmas Tree store. I'm quite fond of it because when I was considering buying it, I got into a conversation with a woman and we talked for almost a half hour about life and work and by the end we convinced each other to buy the dolls and promised to think of each other when we had it out (of course I never put it away).

Lastly is this DIY Sugar Skull Kit. This was the kind of item they had at the cash register to get people to buy impulsively, and it so worked on me.

What I particularly like about this is that it comes with this nice little booklet that has the history of Dia de los Muertos and the origins of the sugar skull.

So here I begin my own journey to create my own sugar skull.
Fun Fact from the Book: They aren't just called sugar skulls for fun, authentic ones are actually made from sugar because that was an abundant resource in Mexico and it was a great inexpensive material for artists.

What I really liked about this paint is that it dried super quickly which made it easy to do things like borders around the eyes without worrying about mixing paint.

And here we have the finished product. If you can't tell, I based my design heavily off of what the box looked like.

Last step is to use the ribbon they give you and turn it into an ornament. I decided to use it as a really awesome and unique door knocker for my bedroom.

I really hope you found this interesting and are inspired to decorate your house or bedroom with some unique and maybe handmade things this Halloweek!

Don't forget to come back every day until the 31st for more Halloween (and sometimes other holidays) related posts!
